Africa is a continent that challenges our consciences, and yet offers great opportunities.
Africa has had:
- 450 years of appalling slave trade
- 110 years of colonial rule followed by “strong-man” despotism and corruption
- Irresponsible lending / borrowing creating unbearable debt burden
The Outcome of this has been:
- Abject Poverty actually on the increase
- Life expectancy as low as 38 years
- 20 million refugees / Starvation - famine
- 30 million orphans street children
There IS something we can do about it !
Three Key Issues:
1. Education
Whereas almost 60% of sub-Sahara African children are enrolled in Primary School, less than 25% are enrolled in Secondary School. Why? Because state secondary schools charge fees ranging from £50 to £200 per year
Time and time again we found that this was one of the greatest frustrations and obstacles for young Africans to succeed. The Secondary school
net enrolment ratio in 2002/03 was 24.7% for West and Central Africa and only 23.2% for
Eastern and Southern Africa.

2. Orphans
Of the 150 million children in sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that 30 million are orphans! Many live with destitute widowed mothers or grand-mothers.
What's causing this?
The AIDS pandemic is now the major contributor - it is decimating the working population of Africa. In Botswana, 36% of all adults are infected with HIV/AIDS...
Life expectancy has fallen from
61 to 39 in the last 7 years
Orphans
- unable to finance education
- many end up on the streets
- caught in a vicious cycle
A typical Christian family will care for a large number of orphans and widows.
3. Malnutrition
More than 30% of sub-Saharan Africans suffer
the highest nutritional deficits in the world.
Some Crude Realities :
- 30% of food grown in the UK is dumped
- Now as many people over- nourished (BMI) as under-nourished in the world
- 80% of sub-Saharan Africans are farmers, but they are unable to feed themselves
What's happened ?
- Archaic farming methods on small family holdings
- No crop rotation, frequent drought, lack of irrigation
- Many farming families headed by the elderly and sick
- No money to invest in seed or fertilisers
- War and displacement
African People are Making Things Happen!
In Northern Malawi, a group of pastors with a Godly vision and committed hearts are showing it IS possible to change lives.
With just £200 support per month from us, they:
- Run a Secondary school for 60 pupils
- Provide support for widows and orphans in their area
- Support evangelism and education of inmates in 5 Malawi prisons
- Are developing 3 agricultural training
projects for local farmers with
Ministry of Agriculture advice
| In Western Kenya, pastor Evans Sira Sira and his school-teacher wife Mary... |
|
Evans is chaplain to 300 primary and 37 secondary schools. They care for several orphans in their home. One orphan, Margaret,
has completed a course in communication technology and is now employed. Evans has just made a first payment on a plot of land to be used
to provide food and income for orphans and trainee chaplains.

...and, in Western Uganda, pastor Amos Mukasa and his wife Perry are helping people in their communities to find purpose and future. |
Amos and Perry work in schools and church youth groups, training young people to
be strong in their faith. They are involved in “ABC” AIDS awareness education. Amos and Perry care for 4 orphans - spending £150 per term on school fees
Again, they receive only £200 per month from us
Maoni Orphanage
| In 2000, Bishop Dimba felt compelled to start the Maoni Orphanage in southern Malawi. He began by raising money locally, using church buildings on the outskirts of Blantyre |
|
|
Today the Orphanage cares for 193 children of which
72 are resident and 121 non-resident.
Education is provided in house up to standard 5, by teachers who earn only
£10 per month |
They Have Ambitious Plans for the Future, such as:
- Irrigated Farm, Windmill & Fish Tanks
- One extra school level added each year
- Facilities for vocational training
- Improved housing, health and nutrition
God multiplies the loaves and the fishes in the hands of His people today!
Areas of Special Need
- Over 100 children at the Orphanage
still to be sponsored (like Fares Witness)
- A vehicle for Evans’ school work
- Urgent famine relief in Malawi
- Many capital investments still unrealised: the farm
Could you help the orphanage to sponsor a child?
Yes! I would like to Sponsor a Child!
